The School of urban planning first established as the department of urban planning at the college of fine arts at the University of Tehran in 1965.  In 1971, a post-graduate program in urban planning was established. In 1991, for the first time in the country, the doctoral program in urban planning launched.

In order to address the need of the society to professional urban planners and designers working in municipalities and public and private sectors, the undergraduate program in urban planning was launched in 1999. This program enhanced the knowledge and skills of students in post-graduate program. These programs all have been conducted to address the country's pathway to sustainable development
